Description
The grandmother is teaching the little girl the Nunamiut Eskimo (Brooks Range) version of "cat's cradle", a popular pastime with these people. The dwelling shown is the traditional caribou skin tent formerly used by these people "on the move" after game. The window is made of bear's intestine, the door is a grizzly bear skin, and the stovepipe is a modern touch (circa 1950). Grandmother and granddaughter wear cotton "kuspuks" protecting fur garments underneath. In the background are the limesone cliffs of Anaktuvuk Pass.
