A life long New Englander, Kate was born in Waterville, Maine and raised in the hills of Vermont. She began formal art training at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York and with the Sweet Briar College Junior Year in France Program. In her words, "I enjoy the challenge of designing sculpture. How can I relate the piece to this unique site? I ask myself in the initial design phases. How does the piece interact with the sun and wind? Will it be seen from a distance? How can I engage people who are close to the piece? It pleases me when a sculpture shows clearly from a distance but also intimately involves the nearby viewer."
Kate is well known for her public sculptures which she began in the early 70's with participation in a Vermont International Sculpture Symposium. In 1980, Kiss II, a large corten steel sculpture, was installed at the public library in Burlington, Vermont, and since then she has completed sculptures, for, among others, the U.S. Customs Station in Highgate, Springs, Vermont; Colby Curtis Museum in Stanstead, Quebec; Norwegian Museum of Science and Technolgy in Oslo, Norway and for the Mitsubishi Estate Company in Sendai, Japan.
She works on private and public commissions from her Williston, Vermont sculpture workshop. She welcomes inquiries and visits.
