Description

In 1871, the City of Providence erected the Red Bridge to connect Providence with East Providence. The bridge was a "swing" bridge, swiveling to the center of the river instead of raising like a standard drawbridge.

The Gatehouse was constructed to house the complicated equipment necessary for controlling the bridge. Because it was so important that the bridge be functional at all times, a manager lived onsite.

The Gatehouse served this purpose for 100 years, until a new bridge was built in the 1970s. The Gatehouse fell into disuse for many years. In 1993, the building was purchased and completely renovated, becoming a five-star restaurant. Banquet facilities were later added.

Since 1993, the Gatehouse has gone on to win many accolades, awards and "Best of Rhode Island" designations for Service, Restaurant Bar and Romantic Dining.
