Walk in Henry's footsteps with nine of your friends for 6 days! You will be led by experienced travel guide and Thoreau Society Board Member, Jen Walker, as you canoe the Concord River, explore Walden Woods and the cabin site, climb Monadnock, visit the site of Thoreau's famous night in jail, and tour Cape Cod. Along the way, talk with Thoreau scholars who will meet us at various destinations. Lodging and food for this six day excursion is included in the cost of the trip.
Gather a group and share the cost of the trip -- making the indivudal expense for 6 days as little as $275 per person!
Special Instructions
Participants are responsible for travel to and from Concord, where 6-day excursion will begin and end.
Travel during the week will necessitate some carpooling; drivers will be reimbursed for gas. To truly follow in Thoreau's footsteps, we will live simply throughout the duration of the trip; we will stay in a very comfortable, yet simple hostel in nearby Harvard, where we will take most of our meals communally. Friendly Crossways is a perfect location for our travels as it is convenient to Concord and within a short drive to other destionations. Special thanks to the proprietor of the hostel, Mary, and her family, for offering us a place to stay while we explore Thoreau's world.
Dates of the trip to be arranged by contacting jen at jwollen2@gwu.edu. Preferred times of travel are: May, June, Sept., Oct. These months provide the most suitable weather and allow us to avoid some of the summer vacationing crowds.
You should be in good physical health to participate in this trip, as we will be very active. However, don't let the mountain climb scare you away! You will be able to work at your own level - making it to the top is not the goal of experiencing Monadnock.
