Have you ever stayed at an earthship? Here is a unique opportunity for two of you to spend two nights at the Dobson House in El Prado, New Mexico (Just outside of Taos.) Set 7,000 feet above the Rio Grande Gorge in El Prado, Dobson House offers grand views of the sage desert, and the mountains of New Mexico can be seen in all directions.

An environmentally friendly building designed by architect Michael Reynolds, Dobson House has the feel of a traditional New Mexican adobe, with curving walls, red sandstone floors, and handmade tiles.



A Taos architect, Reynolds is known for his "Earthships," innovative buildings designed to have minimal impact on the environment. His Earthships are powered by solar electricity, have no central heating or cooling, get their water supply from rain water collected on the roof, and require no plumbing because of Reynolds' invention: the solar toilet. His designs incorporate other environmentally friendly features, including earthen berms, thick ceilings, south facing windows, and building materials made from discarded materials such as tires and cans.



Although Dobson House is not a traditional Earthship because it contains plumbing, it remains true to Reynolds' vision in every other aspect. Dobson House took three years to build, and the owners did 80% of the work themselves to ensure that the house was exactly as they wanted it.
