Description
The painting of Susannah and the Elders depicts an episode from the Old Testament (Book of Daniel, Chapter 13).
The artist is unknown - painting comes from Bolognese, Italy region/style and is circa 1650. It is oil on canvas and measures 69 1/4" x 48".
This history of Susannah was placed in the beginning of the book of Daniel until St. Jerome. It is not found in the "King James Version" Bible (nor in many others).
Antecendent: As Susannah (wife of Joakim) bathes in her garden, she is approached by two elders. She is falsely accused by them, but her innocence is proven (by a young Daniel) and he prevents her from being stoned.
