A conservatorship is an important consideration for a child with disabilities who is approaching the age of majority (18). A limited conservator or limited guardian is appropriate for individuals whose conditions impair their ability to care for themselves or their property. A special needs trust is also an important consideration for the child/adult with special needs to protect their access to public benefits.

Special Needs Trusts (SNTs), preserve government benefit eligibility and leave assets that will meet the supplemental needs of the person with a disability, those that go beyond food, shelter, and clothing and the medical and long term supports and services of Medicaid.
