Description

The Village Cafe on Newbury Street in Portland has always been a family restaurant. In 1936 Vincenzo and Maria Reali opened a neighborhood tavern. They catered to the dockworker, longshoremen and their families from Portland's busy waterfront. Spaghetti and spitzatelli were on the menu every day, at 20 cents for a regular plate and 30 cents for a large one. Because of the hearty and delicious food, the good company and Vincenzo's famous homemade wine people were drawn to the village. They felt at home, and they and their families have been regulars ever since.
