Description

A friend of WXXI offers a unique collection of nine framed views of Rochester's Four Corners between 1885 and 1896. These digital reproductions depict a time in the city's history when the central business district was undergoing major changes. Horse drawn trolleys were replaced by electric streetcars, telegraph and telephone lines were buried underground, and the city's first skyscrapers appeared. The images include: (1) Main Street Bridge from the Powers Building - 1885; (2) Main St. looking west from Main St. Bridge - 1888; (3) Exchange and State Streets north from the Erie Canal - 1889; (4) Powers Building and Hotel - 1889; (5) Wilder Building - 1890; (6) South side of West Main St. looking east from Fitzhugh St. - 1890; (7) Powers Bldg. - 1891; (8) North side of Main St. looking east from the Four Corners - 1893; and (9) North side of West Main St. looking east from Fitzhugh St. - 1896. All are archival framed under ultra-violet light filtering conservation clear glass. The overall frame sizes range from 13 x 11" to 13 ½" x 16 ½". All are date captioned with either a faux distressed or engraved plate. A nail location guide for hanging as a grouping is included."
