It wasn't pretty, but it got the job done. That's what can be said of the one-story frame Chicago Firehouse, built in 1884. A second story was added in 1891 for sleeping space and to provide a feed loft. (Horses were were used around the U.S. to pull firefighters and their equipment from the very earliest days on into the 1920s. This rugged firehouse was abandoned in 1915.
