Description

Covelli Loyce "Coco" Crisp (born November 1, 1979) is a center fielder for the Boston Red Sox, formerly of the Cleveland Indians.

Crisp was traded to the Boston Red Sox in January of 2006. The Red Sox sent prospect third baseman Andy Marte, pitcher Guillermo Mota, catcher Kelly Shoppach, a player to be named later, and cash considerations. The Indians sent Crisp along with pitcher David Riske and catcher Josh Bard. Crisp was expected to fall into the role of former Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon, playing center field and batting leadoff.

After a promising start to his Red Sox career, which included signing a 3-year contract extension worth $15.5 million with the Red Sox, Crisp broke his left index finger attempting to steal 3rd base and spent many weeks on the disabled list. After returning to the Red Sox outfield on May 28th, thanks to the great play from teammate Kevin Youkilis in the leadoff spot, Crisp has usually been batting in the 7th or 8th line-up spot. He has a .279 batting average with 8 home runs and 20 RBIs as of August 5th. So far, Crisp's 2006 season may be best remembered for a fantastic defensive catch on June 29th.

Once injuries removed Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon from the lineup, Youkilis was moved to the fifth spot, and Crisp returned to his regular leadoff spot. Throughout the 2006 season, Crisp has been compared to his predecessor Johnny Damon. Although not quite the leadoff hitter or an offensive threat as Damon, Crisp is considered even better defensively than Damon, a great center fielder himself.

Coco has been, and still is, a BIG FAN FAVORITE!
