"Flowers in a Vase" was painted by Shirley Hess, 82. She started painting as a child, but she did not take formal lessons until she was 50 years old. She grew up in Pittsburgh during the depression and moved to Washington, DC, where she worked for the Department of the Navy. She now paints primarily in watercolors as in this painting. She and her husband live in Leisure World in Montgomery County, Maryland.
