Marian Coffin Garden at Gibraltar, Wilmington, DE - Tour for 12

Item Number: 333
Time Left: CLOSED
Description
A garden tour of the Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar for up to twelve people. The Gibraltar estate was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and in 1999 Preservation Delaware completed a capital campaign and major restoration project to return the Gardens to their original appearance and open them to the public.
The estate's designer, Marian Coffin, was a true pioneer in American landscape architecture. She was one of the first formally trained female landscape architects in the United States. Graduating from MIT in 1904 and opening her own business in New York shortly after graduation proved to be the best decision she could have made. Her connection to the duPont family had been cultivated for many years. This lead to several commissions in the area: Winterthur, St. Amour, Mt. Cuba, Christ Church, and the University of Delaware. Gibraltar is her only existing, completely intact, residential design.
Special Instructions
Tour is for garden portion of the estate only. Up to twelve people. Mutually agreed upon date and time between June 1 and December 1, 2007. Grounds are partially handicapped accessible.
