Description

Here's the church, and here's the steeple. Open the door... Where are the people? David Messer had family displaced throughout the New Orleans area during the storm, including the flooded areas of Metairie and St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. This photo essay is a capture of time and space, 15 months after hurricane Katrina and the breaking of two NOLA levees in August of 2005. The photographer traveled with his family the week of Thanksgiving through the Lower Ninth Ward, Midtown, St. Bernard Parish, and Uptown and documented the conditions of places of worship, homes, and businesses. All photographs were taken in New Orleans with the exception of the "Fats" Domino furniture picture. The furniture taken from the bedroom of the musician's home after the flood surprisingly ended up in an antique store over 400 miles away in the photographer's hometown of Florence, Alabama.
