Description
"Elfquest" was this country's first continuing fantasy/adventure graphic novel series to be co-created, written and illustrated by a woman. She is Wendy Pini, for whom "Elfquest" is a deeply personal project, born in 1977. "Elfquest" became a phenomenon in the comics industry, appealing to comics and sci-fi/fantasy fans alike. Over three million of her novel volumes have been sold.
This colorful and bold piece of original art titled "Elfquest - Wolfrider Cutter on a Wolf" is a "must have" for any "Elfquest" fan or for anyone who enjoys fantasy or sci-fi art in comic book style.
Ms. Pini has inscribed her work for WGBH with "Live Wild!" "Live Free!" and we'd just alter the last phrase a bit to mean "Bid Generously!"
About the Illustrator: Wendy Pini began her professional career as an illustrator for science fiction magazines, with work appearing in issues of Galaxy, Worlds of If, and Galileo, among others. The themes of "tribe" and "quest" always pervaded her work. In 1977, she and her husband Richard began talking about using a group of elves to carry the theme, and a new, original quest story started to take shape over time, via a number of impromptu discussions.
Later that year, Wendy and Richard decided to spin Wendy's tale into the self-published ongoing comic book series Elfquest", and they created Warp Graphics to be the publishing company. Wendy took artistic inspiration from Victorian illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, designers such as Walt Disney, Doug Wildey and Erte, as well as comic book greats such as Jack Kirby and Japanese magna artist Osamu Tezuka.
