Description

Digital print of Antonio Jacobsen's painting of a transitional steamship from 1885. A typical passenger/mail ship built for the transatlantic trade, this transitional steamship was equipped with early steam power and fully rigged for sail. Once proven reliable, steam propulsion provided quicker passages and the ability to maintain schedules -- sounding a death knell for the age of sail. Jacobsen was America's folk art hero, recognized for his unsurpassed contributions to the nation's maritime history. During a painting career of over 45 years, from 1873 to 1919, his paintings covered the transition from the age of sail to steam. The artist spent most of his life in NJ, maintaining a home in West Hoboken.
