Novel by Aharon Appelfeld

A haunting, tragic story set in pre World War 11 Ukraine. The novel centers on Paul Rosenfeld, the nine-year old child of divorced parents. He lives with his mother Henia, a school teacher, and during the day is cared for by a getile girl named Halina, who Paul comes to care for deeply. When Halina is murdered by her jealous boyfriend, Paul's life takes a dramatic shift.
