Description
Guided by the historic breakthroughs of the Human Genome Project, scientists are unlocking the secrets of the human genetic code. The Board of Governors Gene Therapeutics Research Institute (GTRI) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is working to harness the power of the Human Genome Project to develop innovative gene therapy strategies that could cure or even prevent disease.
Researchers are now able to unravel the genetic causes of disease, which could be a gene that has mutated or one that is missing. These discoveries have opened the door to developing new ways to treat the cause of the disease. Scientists have already begun to put normal DNA or DNA products into diseased cells, where they can work as drugs to treat mutated or missing genes.
