About
Tony van Hasselt

After coming to the United States, Dutch-born Tony van Hasselt earned his living in commercial design and art-related fields. He studied under Frank Reilly, a popular teacher at New York's famous Art Students League. As one of the first workshop pioneers, van Hasselt started Painting Holidays, an international workshop agency in 1963. This venture gave him the opportunity to paint with and study under famous artists such as John Pike, Edgar A. Whitney, Robert E. Wood, Tom Hill, Milford Zornes, Rex Brandt and others.

Van Hasselt is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, has participated in national shows and won awards in state and regional exhibits. Three of his paintings are part of the Masterworks Bermudiana Collection in Bermuda. His work has been featured in magazines such as Southwest Art, American Artist and Australian Artist, on the covers of The Artist's Magazine and Watercolor Magic as well as in eight art instruction books. Tony first authored A Studio Visit, followed by Outdoor Watercolor Workshop (Watson-Guptill). He has co-authored The Watercolor Fix-It Book and Painting with the White of Your Paper (North Light) with Judi Wagner. He is a regular contributor to Watercolor Magic, The Artist's Magazine and the Dutch art magazine Palet en Tekenstift.

Well-known Key West watercolorist artist Martha Watson Sauer (died 2005) painted with and studied under Tony for over 20 years.
