Description

“Pike fishing” is a print made by H. Alken and J. Clark.  It was published by T. McLean in London on January 1, 1820.  Henry Alken was a social cartoonist and a draughtsman who made prints of sports and sporting events.  The subject of his prints were very popular within the English market.  He etched in soft-ground plates, which were then colored by hand.  Many of his prints were published by McLean in the “Repository of Wit and Humour.” Alken first studied art under his father and J.T. Barker Beaumont.

This print shows a scene of two well-dressed men fishing for pike. One man is holding a fishing rod, while the other is on the ground holding a net close to the water.  This print not only shows a sporting scene, but the humorous aspect of the scene is clear with men getting dirty trying to catch fish in a small body of water.
