Description

Anitra Comune: Anos Boschas (varieta domestica), 1863-1879; Hand-colored Lithograph.  Anitra Comune is translated into Duck.  It is a hand-colored lithograph made by the Italian Lithographer Raimondo Petraroja and edited by Giovanni Boschi in the Atlante Zoologico Popolare.

Raimondo Petraroja created lithographs for an Italian zoological atlas between 1863 and 1879.  This print is in great condition.  It shows a large duck with pastel colored straw or thatch roofed houses in the background.  There are two small swans in the water in the background, but the main focus is the duck in the forground with a blue head and subtle green and blue feathers on its side.  There is an embossed seal below the title of the print that reads: Raimondo Petraroja. Librajo.

The style of this print is known as “Naïve Art,” which is characterized by a lack of sophisticated artistic technique.  Colors used in the print are not exactly true to reality, the objects in the scene may not be true to size, and the artist was free to use more of his imagination and creativity to create the scene.
