1840 Cavalry Saber; Made by the Phillip Justice Company, Philadelphia, 1840-1861

Description
This Civil War sword has a wooden grip that has been cord wrapped. It has some traces of gold plated bronze on the grip. The blade measures 35 1/2 inches long. It still has the original scabbard, or metal sheath. In 1861 alone, Phillip Justice held contracts for 13,685 cavalry sabers. The blades were imported from Schnitzler and Kirshbaum, who were Solingen smiths who had been making swords since 1787. Solingen, a city in Germany, is known as the “City of Blades” because of the popularity sword-making in the area. The sword is in excellent condition
