Bos Americanus, drawn by J.J. Audubon; 1930 reproduction; Original was lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, PA; 1842.

 

John James Audubon was born in Les Cayes, Haiti in 1785, and lived in France until spending much of his adult life in the United States.  Following his work on “The Birds of America,” Audubon began to draw and document the mammals of North America in a project titled “The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America.”  J.T. Bowen produced around 300 sets of the water-colored lithographs in the series. The full title reads:
