Stephen J. Gage has been president of CAMP Inc. (formerly the Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program (CAMP) since November 1990. One of the Ohio Thomas Edison Technology Centers, CAMP also operates the NIST-sponsored Great Lakes Manufacturing Technology Center that concentrates on helping small and medium-sized manufacturers. Under his leadership, CAMP has gained national recognition as an effective model for manufacturing extension.
Steve has extensive experience in industry, government and academia as well as in public sector, non-profit organizations dedicated to economic development. During the late 1980s, he headed Indiana's Corporation for Science and Technology and the Midwest Technology Development Institute. Before that, in private industry in Chicago, he directed corporate-wide engineering for Baxter Travenol and ran International Harvester's Science and Technology Laboratory.
During the 1970s, Steve was with several Federal agencies in Washington, D.C., including serving as the Assistant Administrator for Research & Development in the USEPA under President Carter. He was also a White House Fellow in the President's Office of Science and Technology in 1971-1972 and spent the following two years with the President's Council on Environmental Quality.
Trained as a mechanical and nuclear engineer, Steve received a B.S.M.E. at the University of Nebraska and his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees at Purdue University. He began his professional career in teaching and research with the University of Texas at Austin in the mid-1960s.
