Medical Mutual of Ohio, the oldest health insurance Company in the state. He is chief advisor to the Company regarding the internal and external communications aspects of business decisions and is specifically responsible for Advertising, Public Relations, Government Relations, Community Relations, Marketing Communications, Employee Communications, and Internet Communications.
Prior to joining Medical Mutual in 1997, Mr. Chaney was Senior Vice President and General Manager of the San Francisco office of Hill and Knowlton, one of the largest public relations agencies in the world. Between 1990 and 1993, he left Hill and Knowlton to establish the San Francisco office of DDB Needham Public Relations.
Mr. Chaney has more than 28 years of public relations and advertising experience. He began his career as a newspaper reporter in Reno, Nevada; served four years in the Army as public information officer and post spokesman at Fort Gordon, Georgia; then moved into public relations at Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies in San Francisco. In 1982 he joined the public relations firm Carl Byoir & Associates in Los Angeles, which was later acquired by Hill and Knowlton. During his career, Mr. Chaney also worked with advertising agencies J. Walter Thompson, Foote, Cone and Belding, and DDB Needham.
Mr. Chaney is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society and the winner of numerous public relations industry and advertising awards, including the Distinguished Sales & Marketing Award. He serves on the board of trustees for Cleveland Rock and Roll, Inc. (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum), the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, the Urban League of Greater Cleveland, the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the Athletics Visiting Committee for Cleveland State University, and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in San Francisco. He is also a graduate of the 2002 Leadership Cleveland class.
