Description

Produced as a collaborative effort between Kurt Carlson and Lynda Pownall-Carlson, this elaborate--and heavy--glass head is made in an unusual multi-step process.

Kurt creates the design in glass that comes encased in the hot-sculpted head, which he forms around the design. The entire piece is shaped by manipulating the hot glass in a process Kurt has developed over many years.

Each piece has two to three hours of hot work in it, then is cooled is a two-day annealing process. Once cooled, Lynda adds detailing by drawing a design onto the glass. The piece is then taped and sandblasted to make the design permanent in the glass. The designs are then enhanced with handpainted enamels which receive multiple firings to achieve the finished look.

When finished, the original design is still visible inside the head. By looking into the piece, one is able to see the reflections of the outer design and the colors within.
