Description

Visit the Field Museum & journey through some of the rarest, most beautiful, and most historically valuable maps ever created. See, assembled for the first time, maps and artifacts drawn from cultures and collections around the globe, including original historic and contemporary maps of all kinds, as well as tools and objects related to mapmaking. Find out what maps can tell us about their makers, and how they describe landscapes both known and imaginary, visible and invisible.

Maps will explore a range of themes, including:

The history of maps, Maps as statements of the maker's political, cultural, or spiritual worldview, Developments in the technology of maps; variations in map formats—not only flat paper cartography, but also three dimensional objects and computer-generated systems, How scientists use maps today.

This exhibition does not limit its focus to cartography in the European tradition and features maps from diverse peoples, including Native American cultures and cultures as far flung as Africa, China, Australia, and the Marshall Islands.

Visitors will manipulate hands-on interactives that illustrate mapping techniques and learn the stories behind maps using electronic and audio-visual media. This engaging exhibition demonstrates that maps do much more than simply get us from here to there.
