Description
It's fascinating to see how Balanchine and Robbins approached Russian themes. Three very different faces of Russia are on view here. Alexander Glazounov composed some of the most sumptuous music ever heard on a ballet stage. His score for Raymonda is one of Russia's glories. Balanchine took these charming and lilting melodies and devised a devilishly difficult joy-filled ballet that is one of the glories of the NYCB repertory. Dybbuk probes the dark side of obsession, Jewish mysticism, and social conformity. The source material comes out of Russia at the start of the last century. Stravinsky Violin Concerto makes visible one of the great scores of 20th century giant--Igor Stravinsky. This 1972 ballet moves with a Russian "pulse" that propels the non-stop action. Contained within are two pas de deux or "arias" of melting, heart-stopping transcendence. It may just be Stravinsky as you have never heard him before.
