Description

When I was asked to take a violin and use it to create a sculpture, my mind kept coming back to the idea of incorporating parts of other orchestral instruments. I had never before taken on such a challenge and I knew I would need to step out of my usual world of pottery and Art Quilts.

Where to get parts? Well, Stockton is small and after talking with folks I arrived on the doorstep of Marge David's Piano restoration workshop. What fun I had that morning! I went home armed with donated piano hammers, piano strings, and more to incorporate into my project.

How to lay the violin on a stand? Well, Stockton may be small but the world of English and Irish immigrants is even smaller so I headed for the garage of John Whittock, who makes violins. We chatted and some time later we had a plan, and in a few days I had my stand.

Now the million dollar question - WHAT TO MAKE? As time developed and people visited the studio, legs emerged from the hammers, wings emerged from the strings; imagination was running wild.

The "Bug" evolved and with the help of a great New Zealander, my quality control expert, "Johann Sebastian Bug" was born.

The moral of the story is: If you do not step out of your world into something new, you will never come in contact with a BUG!
