Description
This is a single 19th C. original color copper engraving: 'White Oak' (6 1/2" x 10 1/2"), donated by Salli LaGrone and Tom Delcambre at Fine Offerings. it is taken from an unknown late edition of Histoire des Chenes de l'Amerique (Trees of America), by Andre Michaux (1746-1802) or his son, Francois Andre, translated by Lezermes, and illustrated by Pierre Joseph and Henri Joseph Redoute. Andre Michaux was sent to America in 1785 by the French government to collect timber trees and plants useful as either food or medicine, and thousands of trees were sent back to the royal nurseries at Rambouillet. Their nursery garden in Charleston, South Carolina, also acted as a center for the introduction of plants new to America, among them the 'ginkgo' tree. For the greater part of the 19th century, in its French or English version, the books of Andre Michaux and his son, Francois Andre, remained the standard account of transatlantic trees. This engraving would be a charming companion piece for the pair of early 19th C. Michaux engravings in the auction. Visit Fine Offerings at 2108 8th Avenue S., Suite B, Nashville 37204, TN.
