Enjoy a day out with two of your friends at the Canoe Brook Country Club by placing your bid on a round of golf and lunch for a threesome in Summit, New Jersey.
Canoe Brook members have two great courses to play. The North course is the longer of the two, and features a more traditional collection of holes, with four par-3s and four par-5s. It was completed in 1902, a design by Charles Allison. Allison partnered with H.S. Colt on a number of famous tracks, including Sea Island Golf Club, Pine Valley (consulting), and redesigns of Royal St. George’s and Royal Lytham and St. Annes, two courses in the British Open rotation. Both courses regularly hosts state amateur and professional tournaments but the North is a regular site for sectional U.S. Open qualifying.
“From the back tees, the North course is as tough as any course in the state,” said one member also familiar with Plainfield CC and Baltusrol, legitimate contenders for the title. “Here, you have to hit it very straight. In some cases, there’s only 10 yards from the edge of the fairway to the tree line.” The addition of a new irrigation system promises to keep the rough healthy and thick, adding a new element of difficulty if you’re off the fairway. Architect Rees Jones was hired to renovate tees that had flattened out over the years, as well as to enlarge, re-contour and re-bunker several greens.
The South course is sportier and more fun. It features five par-5s, five par-3s and has more elevation and directional changes, calling for strategic shotmaking. While the slope is similar to the North course, members say it plays about two shots easier. Alfred Tull and Walter Travis are responsible for the design, which was completed in 1924. Travis was an accomplished player (won the U.S. Amateur in 1900, 1901 and 1903 after taking up the game at age 35) who reworked Long Island’s Garden City Golf Club and designed Westchester CC, a regular stop on the PGA Tour.
