A California native, Jason started his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates where he was drafted out of high school in 1992.  He became the Pirates' starting catcher in 1996 and made the National League All Star Team his rookie year.  He came to Oakland in 2005 where he made his first post-season appearance as the As went on to clinch the 2006 AL West Division Championship in 2006.
