Description

This unique, hand-carved Yoruba ibeji was acquired in Nairobi, Kenya in 1965; she stands 8.25" tall and is in fair to good condition. There is a crack in the wood; a further indication that this item has not been altered by a dealer.

In Yoruba culture, the ibeji is the protector of twins and carved wooden figures such as this one--bearing the family mask and carved in the image of each twin--are treated as if they are alive; loved by the mother, oiled regularly, fed and stored on a family altar or the mother's room.
