This red-tailed hawk is getting ready to take flight. Discovered in a field behind the artist's home, the hawk stayed still long enough to be captured in this image, then he immediately flew away. This hawk is looking directly at the viewer, showing how courageous and focused these stoic birds are.

Measures 14 x 11 inches. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology describes the red-tailed as the most common and widespread hawk in North America. It is a bird of open country, frequently seen sitting on utility poles, where it watches for rodents in the grass along the roadside.
