Description

This functional, yet artistic, clock by artist Richard Birkett is really a fanciful piece of sculpture using found objects of every sort to create an assemblage that brings many disparate elements together -- functionality and fiction. Color and the way it is applied is a way of turning common wood and everyday objects into otherworldly machines. They're painted with non-toxic oil paint and the actual clock is a Seiko quartz movement. Turn the crank to start the globe turning and the music box playing "We're Off to See the Wizard" from the Wizard of Oz. Hang this one-of-a-kind, numbered and individually handcrafted piece on a wall or display it on a shelf.

This is a Live Event Item.

Special Instructions

Richard Birkett was born in Idaho and grew up in Washington State before enlisting in the Marines and serving as a machine gunner in Vietnam. After returning home, he attended Fort Wright College, where he studied painting, sculpture, and design. He went on to further study at The Studio School of Spokane and The Skowhegan School in Maine. In the '70s he moved to New York and moved furniture for a living while continuing to show paintings. He continues his career as a painter while his "fantasy clocks" continue to evolve in their sophistication of form and sense of irony.
