About the Artist:

Barbara Nesin is a native of New York City, where she graduated with a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and a M.F.A. from Indiana State University. She has served as Chair of the Department of Art at Spelman College. She describes her work as a labor of hope for the full participation of all peoples in our multi-cultured society. “I often incorporate the signs and symbols of the polyglot cultures of Cuba and Haiti, which  I view as  microcosms  of many of the social issues that continue to loom throughout the Americas. The world views of Judeo-Christian and African diaspora religions such as voodoo also inform the work. Memories of ancestors and homelands of origin are intertwined within a contemporary context.
