R. Sidney Henderson won a scholarship to attend the Chicago Art Institute, Chicago, IL at the age of thirteen. He walked away from art to complete college at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA.  After 40 years away from art, he returned using as his medium ASTM colored pencils. He creates themes from African and African-American life and history. Framing his subjects by a separation of vivid colors and rectangular forms, he strives to convey the thematic grandeur of these rich cultures as depicted in rituals, architecture, objects d’art, and daily life scenes.  Since returning to art, R. Sidney has won numerous awards including,  The Judges Award , 2006 Downtown Disney Festival of the Masters – Orlando, FL; 1^st place in Drawing/Pastels at 2006 4 Bridges Arts Festival - Chattanooga, TN; 1^st place in Fine Art, Mulberry Street Festival- Macon GA; Arts Clayton Gallery, Annual Juried Show/Competition Jonesboro, GA – Honorable Mention.
