Jo Smail Biography
Jo Smail was born, raised and educated in South Africa, receiving degrees from the University of Natal and Johannesburg College of Art. She joined the faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1980 after teaching at several schools in her homeland. Jo is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award, and she has participated in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Baltimore, D.C. and other U.S. cities as well as in South Africa, France, and Israel. Her paintings hang in public and corporate collections in New York and South Africa, including Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, Chase Manhattan Bank in Johannesburg, Mobil Corporation, the Johannesburg Art Museum, and the Pretoria Art Museum.
