H. Ed Smith Biography
H. Ed Smith, who was born in 1942 and raised in the Baltimore area, earned a BFA in 1965 and a MFA in Education/Printmaking in 1969, both from Maryland Institute College of Art. He enjoyed a 31 year teaching career in Baltimore County winning the "Teacher of the Year Award" 3 times. MICA's Young Peoples Program brought him in to teach printmaking. Ed passed away on September 11, 2005.
He was a practicing artist as well and throughout his career maintained his exhibition schedule with printmaking, weaving, drawing and stained glass. Being an accomplished artist, he participated in national and regional art exhibitions and was a founding member of the Maryland Printmakers.
After retiring from Baltimore City Public Schools, Ed volunteered with Americorps and taught textured printmaking workshops for the visually-impaired at the Maryland School for the Blind. During these years, Ed was known also for his mexed-media assemplages that just happened to be clocks. These were shown at the Out of Hand Craft Shpw and the American Craft Council Winter Market in Baltimore.
Since travel was important to Ed and his wife Betsy, the donated print called "Atotonilco Pilgrimage" is a rememberance of a Mexican visit.
