Deborah Hartwick's Biography
Deborah Hartwick founded Heartwells in 1984 in Greenbelt, Maryland. She has dedicated her work to preserving traditional folk art while developing new design ideas. Her art is inspired by antique toys, sewing implements and vintage textiles. She uses these inspirations to create her own designs but with the traditional influences of the past. All of her pieces are made from cotton, linen or wool and are hand dyed or over dyed. Each piece is made by hand by her. Deborah has a design degree from the University of Maryland and also studied tayloring and textile work with Miki Yoshitsu, Japanese teacher and designer. Among some of Deborah's awards and Honors are Country Home Magazine for Conspicuous Contribution to the Preservation of Traditional American Artisanship 1988, Audubon Naturalist Society Juror's Award 1992-94 and Early American Life Magazine's Best Craftsmen Award 2003. Deborah's work has been published in many national magazines and has exhibited her work world wide through designer shows and speciality shops.
