Alzaruba Biography
Alzaruba is a transcultural, multimedia artist who currently teaches at MICA and Towson University. His childhood years were spent in the Pacific Basin of Asia and the Panama Canal Zone before enlisting in the Navy where he became an award-winning illustrator. After resigning from the Navy in 1984, he received a BFA from Otis Parsons in Los Angeles and an MFA from MICA in 1990. During this time he was awarded the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Fellowship. In 1995 he began working at The American Museum of Visionary Art where he is well known for his costumed performance work. Alazaruba has been in over 100 exhibitions all over the world. In 2000, he constructed his first public work entitled "The Scent of Light," an 82 ft. long ship-shaped enclosure around four mature hickory trees. This was followed by three other installations and an experimental performance of Recycled Ocean in MICA's Falvey Hall, which have transformed his career and brought together all of his diverse interests.
