Rodney Cook Biography
Each August for the last seven years, Rod has had a one man show of watercolors at the Blue Moon. Those exhibitions have been an enormous success. The subject of Rod's art is Rehoboth Beach.
The Boardwalk, the amusement rides, the beach, the old houses, the old businesses, the night life are all aspects of his investigations . Last year Dolles on Rehoboth Avenue, Khor Bros. Frozen Custard and the Blue Moon Bar took center focus for the show. Crowded beach scenes with brightly colored umbrellas and loads of lazy activity finished out the show.
Hot sun, bright color with children playing in the sand and surf will be prominent in Rod's new work. Carousels and ferris wheels, pizza and french fries, the Five & Dime, and Starkey's ice cream are already being painted. Electric signs beckon. Lifeguards are ever present. Rod's work is meant to preserve and celebrate our Rehoboth way of life.
Rod's watercolors are currently on display at Galleria Tango, Rehoboth Art League, and other venues to be announced for the summer.
Rod has been active in the Baltimore art scene during the eighties and nineties. He has painted many large murals inside and outside public buildings. His previous work had centered on Baltimore and Washington urban landscapes. They are in numerous corporate and private collections.
He has been known as an energetic teacher for many years. He currently teaches drawing, painting, and design at Maryland Institute College of Art, at Villa Julie College, and for the Community Colleges of Baltimore County. Managing seven courses at three institutions makes every minute painting an intense, but private and relaxing pleasure..
