Description

Johnny Oates was born in North Carolina and moved to Prince George, Virginia where he played his high school baseball.  He went on to catch at Virginia Tech where he has been named to their Hall of Fame.  He entered the pros with the White Sox and later played with the Orioles, the Braves, the Phillies, the Dodgers and then Yankees.  Johnny went in to managing upon his retirement from playing.  He started with the Orioles and was named manager in 1991 when Frank Robinson was dismissed in mid season.  He went to become Manager of the Year 2 years later.  He wound up managing the Texas Rangers for the balance of his career.  Johnny Oates died at the age of 58 at the Medical College of Virginia with a brain tumor.
