Description

"Seated Man" is charcoal and acrylic on rag paper.  The matted picture measures 7½x7½" and the metal frame measures 16½x20½".

Tom was trained in the arts at Wesleyan University in Middleton, CT.  He practices disciplines in various media including charcoal, acrylics and oils.  Tom's art addresses the presence of human existence using self-portraits and paintings that present visual metaphors.  The artist's canvases depict an exaggerated sense of life.  He paints a picture like he is directing a play.  Much of his work is very literally theatrical.  Tom paints a situation as he imagines it.  Though he sees the world as an intricate web of human interaction, he thinks that most situations are best described within the confines of a rectangular canvas.  He trusts that an artist cannot escape the notion of self and thus believes he should exploit his personal iconography in a theatrical fashion.  His work not only encompasses an academic approach to image making but also adheres to the ideals of surrealism.  Tom is influenced by prolific artists who convey both intelligence and imagination.  He loves the work of Jonathan Borofsky, for example.  He is also attracted to those who approach art as a monumental adventure.
