Description
So you want to be published . . . Now is your chance to meet with a publisher!
Tony Lyons, former President and Publisher of the Lyons Press (and Uncle of two MSC students), launched Skyhorse Publishing in September 2006, and its first titles were published in March 2007. After just one year in business, the company has over 120 titles in print.
The Lyons Press was featured twice in Publishers Weekly’s list of the country’s ten fastest growing small publishers and tripled its size during Tony’s five-year tenure. Lyons talked to dozens of potential investors, all of whom asked the same question: "Can a new book publishing company make it in the current environment?" His response was and is: "Succeeding as an independent publisher is not going to be easy, but by scouring the country for genre books that large publishers ignore, resurrecting forgotten classics, and by moving both more quickly and with greater attention to detail than other publishers, I believe we can flourish." Lyons raised the necessary capital from eight investors (including two other publishers).
As of January 1, 2008, Skyhorse titles are distributed to the bookstore and library market by W. W. Norton. Bill Rusin, Vice President, Director of Sales and Marketing, at W. W. Norton commented, "Skyhorse is developing a strong program. We have the potential to do great things together in the future." Lyons added, "We look forward to working with the terrific team at Norton."
As of January 2008, Skyhorse plans to publish further in the areas of general sports (both team and individual), outdoor sports, narrative non-fiction, history and military history, nature and conservation, reference, house and home, gambling, hobbies, rural living, business, and maverick titles in a variety of other niches.
