Description

This stunning photograph is a must-have for anyone interested in old photos from China or for anyone with a connection or interest in Hunan province. The photo features a dragon parade in Changsha, circa 1916, and shows the Hsiang-ya Hospital in the background. The photo is a reproduction from the personal collection of Nina Gage, who headed the Yale-China Association's (then Yale-in-China) nursing education and care program at the Hsiang-ya School of Nursing from 1909-1926. Nursing was recognized as a special priority for the Yale-China Association's early health work in Hunan province as nursing had no professional precedents in Chinese society at that time. Today, Yale-China has many programs in the area of public health and nursing and continues to work closely with Hsiang-ya (now Xiangya).

The photograph is a 5.75"x10" black and white image. Photograph comes with a custom-cut white mat for an 11"x14" frame. Frame not included. Please note: This is a reproduction of a very old photograph and therefore there are areas of where there is substantial fading shown in the photo. We would suggest that the fading only adds to the photograph's beauty. It is interesting to note how rural the photograph is; today Changsha is a bustling city with a population of more than six million people.
