Description

This umbrella was purchased at the Ladies' Recreation Club in 1997 before the handover of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty. On alternate panels is a red disk with "1997" curving along the top and "明天会更好" ("Tomorrow will be even better") along the bottom. Within the smaller white circle within the disk is "中华人民共和国" ("The People's Republic of China"" at the top and "Hong Kong" at the bottom, flanked by two red stars, with a bauhinia flower, the symbol of Hong Kong, in the center. The other alternate panels show a sytlized view of Central with Bank of China, the Cheung Kong Center, a few other buildings and, in Hong Kong harbor, a saling junk. In the sky above the harbor is "香港" ("Hong Kong").
