Description

This Lei Feng memorabilia package includes this vintage poster of Lei Feng (雷锋), a Peoples Liberation Army soldier who was catapulted to icon status when his purported diary was discovered posthumously during the Cultural Revolution. Lei Feng was held up as a model of selfless virtue; and is perhaps the best known of the hundreds of communist models from the time period. The poster was purchased in the late 1980s in Changsha and comes with a signed copy of the essay, Lei Feng and I, by Andrea Worden, Yale-China Bachelor at Hunan Medical University from 1987-1989. In the article, Andrea discusses how she inadvertently became wrapped up in a campaign to "internationalize" Lei Feng in the early 1990s, and how she uncovered the truth behind reports in the People's Daily that Lei Feng was inspiring students to become models of selfless service at West Point and Harvard. The package also includes a copy of the illustrated children's book "Uncle Lei Feng" (Lei Feng Shu Shu) in Chinese.

A must-have for anyone interested in Chinese political history. Poster has been dry-mounted and custom-framed.
