This unusual piece of calligraphy is done on a long piece of burlap, and is of two poems from the Tang Dynasty that read:

You have left me behind, old friend, at the Yellow Crane Terrace,
On your way to visit Yangzhou in the misty month of flowers;
Your sail, a single shadow, becomes one with the blue sky,
Till now I see only the river, on its way to heaven.

唐诗二首：故人西辞黄鹤楼，烟花三月下扬射。孤帆远影碧空尽，惟见长江天际流。
众鸟高飞尽，孤云独去闲。相看两不厌，只有敬亭山。

The piece measures 98" by 35".

Guolin Shen is a Fox Fellow from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, who is doing research at Yale on U.S. Congressional images of China. Having begun his study of Chinese Calligraphy at an early age, Guolin has imitated and practiced many different features and styles from famous calligraphy works through Chinese history. Instructed and guided by Han Tianheng, one of the most prestigious artists of seal curving and Chinese calligraphy in contemporary China, Guolin has created his own expression based on the styles in Song Dynasty. In 1998, his first exhibition of calligraphy was held successfully at Fudan University. Since then, Guolin's work has been exhibited at the Shanghai Art Museum and at art galleries in other Asian countries. It has also has been collected by the Shanghai Library (1999) and by the Japanese Beilu Calligraphy Institution (2004 and 2005). He is a member of the Shanghai Masters of Calligraphy Association and also holds a PhD in Mass Communication from Fudan University, where he will begin a position as assistant professor in the Journalism School after he returns to China this summer. This piece was part of the exhibit, "Dancing Ink and Singing Strings: Works by Guolin Shen," held in April 2007 at the Yale-China Association's New Haven office.

沈国麟 1978年2月生于上海，祖籍浙江绍兴。1996年起就读于复旦大学新闻学院，先后获得文学学士和硕士学位。2003年9月开始攻读媒介管理学博士，主要研究方向为美国政治传播、国际传播和媒介管理等，师从秦绍德、孙哲和张国良等教授。2005年5月，出版学术专著《镜头中的国会山：美国国会和大众传媒》（复旦大学出版社，2005年5月版）。2006年10月获法学博士。2006年9月，获福克斯基金会资助赴美国耶鲁大学学习国际关系和政治学。他在艺术上师从中国著名书画家、篆刻家韩天衡先生，1998年在复旦大学举办"城市中的向日葵"书画双人展、作品被复旦大学校长作为礼物送给校董；1999年参加上海图书馆"学生书画社十年回顾展"，作品被上海图书馆收藏； 2001年参加上海美术馆"新世纪首届上海书法篆刻作品新人新作展"；2004、2005年参加"第20届日本纪念北陆书道院中国特别展示会"，作品被日本北陆书道院收藏。2005年，作品入选上海市青年书法大展和2005上海市书法大展。现为上海市书法家协会会员。
