Description
This tour will take you to the current, but soon to be exceeded heights and depths of Asia's most dynamic city. You will walk the historic Bund while learning why the engineering feats of architects of early modern Shanghai (1900-1930) are just as astounding as those of the new skyscraper city (1992-) of Pudong barely 400 yards to the east on the other side of the Huangpu River. You will then explore the remaining vestiges of the old Walled Chinese City, the French Concession, the International Concession, the Jewish Quarter and its environs in Hongkou district. You will also visit new luxury malls and meet the vendors just outside the mall doors trying to sell you a remarkable copy of the Patek Philipe automatic watch you saw inside for $10,000. (The hawker's price does not include the final three zeros.) As you course your way through the city, you will test various modes of public transportation and the city's native cuisine, though not necessarily at the same time. Avid walkers will be able to accomplish this much in eight or nine hours. A slower paced tour is possible but will compromise the itinerary.
Special Instructions
The tour allows no more than 5 people. Date of tour must be agreed upon by both parties; inclement weather short of force majeur will not be a reason for changing the tour date; guide will provide bandaids for blisters.
